A special food safety inspection drive in Bengaluru has uncovered serious lapses at several high-end hotels, including expired milk, fungal growth on vegetables, expired food products, and unhygienic kitchen and storage conditions.
The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected 26 three-star and five-star hotels across Bengaluru on August 7. A total of 30 teams of food safety officers carried out inspections across all zones under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
What Did Officials Find?
The inspection revealed several violations of food safety regulations, including:
- Vegetables and food items affected by fungal growth.
- Expired milk and other dairy products.
- Expired bakery products.
- Improper storage of chicken, meat and fish.
- Unhygienic kitchen and food storage areas.
- Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food not being stored separately.
- Improper food labelling.
- Cases of food misbranding.
- Violations of mandatory FSSAI labelling requirements.

Biggest Seizure: Radisson Blu
The Radisson Blu (The Atria) reported the biggest seizure during the inspection drive.
Officials seized 105 kg of expired food products, including:
- 50 kg chicken
- 23 kg meat
- 7 kg fish
- 25 kg vegetables
At The Lalit Ashok (Annex South), officials also seized and destroyed 32 litres of expired milk.
35 Food Samples Sent for Laboratory Testing
During the inspection drive, authorities collected 35 food samples and sent them to the Food Laboratory for analysis.
The samples included:
Tea powder, chicken, mutton, fish, edible oil, chilli powder, turmeric powder, tomato sauce, lemon juice, cheese, papad, cashew nuts, ginger, pepper powder, spice powder and milk.
Notices Issued to Hotels
The department issued notices to the hotels over the food safety violations.
Officials said further action will be taken based on the laboratory test reports and applicable provisions of the law.
Maharashtra Also Cracking Down on Food Safety Violations
The Bengaluru inspections come at a time when the Maharashtra FDA is also conducting strict action against food safety violations.
In recent weeks, the Maharashtra FDA has suspended the food licences of several restaurants and clubs in Mumbai after inspections found issues such as pests, expired food products and other safety violations.
