India’s First Vande Bharat Freight Train Undergoes 130 kmph Trial Run on Kota-Rohal Khurd Route

Trial conducted to assess high-speed performance, braking, propulsion and energy recovery systems

India’s first Vande Bharat freight train has successfully undergone a trial run at a speed of 130 kmph on the Kota-Rohal Khurd section of West Central Railway (WCR). The trial marks an important step towards developing faster, more efficient and technologically advanced freight transportation in the country.

The trial was conducted as part of technical testing to evaluate the train’s performance under high-speed and loaded conditions. Teams from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Integral Coach Factory (ICF) were present during the testing process.

Key Technical Systems Tested

During the trial, railway officials assessed several critical systems of the Vande Bharat freight train, including its electrical and propulsion systems, regenerative energy recovery, thermal capacity, traction, braking performance and jerk levels.

According to Saurabh Jain, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Kota Division, the regenerative energy test focused on determining how efficiently the train could recover electrical energy during braking. The recovered energy can potentially contribute to improved energy efficiency.

The thermal capacity test was conducted to assess the performance of the train’s electrical and propulsion systems while operating at high speeds. Officials also evaluated traction and braking performance to ensure stable and controlled operation.

Boost to Faster Freight Transportation

The 130 kmph trial is being viewed as an important development in India’s efforts to modernise its freight transportation network. Faster freight trains could help reduce transportation time and improve the efficiency of logistics operations across the country.

The testing of Vande Bharat-based freight technology also highlights Indian Railways’ growing focus on advanced propulsion systems, energy efficiency and high-speed rail operations.

The successful completion of technical trials could pave the way for further testing and development of faster freight services, potentially strengthening India’s logistics infrastructure and supporting more efficient movement of goods by rail.
