BJP Vows Legal Support for Arrested Kerala Councillor as Political Row Intensifies

Political tensions have escalated in Kerala following the arrest of BJP councillor R. Sugathan, with the party alleging that the action was driven by political motives and promising a strong legal response. Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala BJP president and MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the party would extend full legal support to the councillor and challenge the case through appropriate judicial channels. He maintained that the BJP would rely on legal remedies rather than political confrontation in addressing the issue.

BJP Vows Legal Support for Arrested Kerala Councillor

Sugathan, a councillor from the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, was taken into custody earlier this week in connection with a criminal case. His arrest has sparked sharp reactions across the political spectrum, with rival parties demanding further action and questioning his continuation in public office.

The BJP has strongly rejected accusations against the councillor, arguing that legal proceedings should be allowed to run their course before any political conclusions are drawn. Party leaders have described the arrest as an attempt to target opposition voices and influence local political dynamics.

The controversy has also triggered a debate within the city corporation, where both ruling and opposition groups have raised questions regarding Sugathan’s future role as an elected representative. Political observers believe the issue could become a major flashpoint in local politics over the coming weeks.

During the press conference, Chandrasekhar also highlighted the achievements of the Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contrasting them with what he described as Kerala’s ongoing economic and employment challenges. He argued that governance should focus on economic growth, job creation and public welfare regardless of political ideology.

The BJP leader further welcomed several former members of left-leaning political groups into the party, stating that support for the BJP continues to grow across different sections of society.

As legal proceedings move forward, the arrest of the councillor is expected to remain at the center of Kerala’s political discourse, with both supporters and critics closely watching the developments.
